Pat Mirenda has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education at the University of British Columbia since 1996. Dr. Mirenda lectures widely and teaches courses about inclusive education, developmental disabilities, autism, augmentative communication, and positive behaviour support. The second edition of her book, Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Management of Severe Communication Disorders in Children and Adults, was published in May 1998. She advises both masters and doctoral students with interest in autism who are completing research about stress and coping in behaviour interventionists who work in family homes; literacy instruction of students with histories of reading failure; and video modelling interventions, among others. Her current research includes a 3-year evaluation of the outcomes of intensive early intervention on young children with autism and their families. She is also involved in research examining the written output of students with disabilities who use specialized software, and on the long-term outcomes of technology use by young adults who use augmentative communication.
