Starr first worked as a special education teacher in Alberta, Canada. She completed her doctoral studies in Special Education at the University of Alberta. She then conducted post-doctoral research at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London co-ordinating a family genetic study of autism associated with profound mental retardation. She is currently an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor in Canada teaching courses in special education and autism. Her current autism research includes an examination of parental perceptions of the education their children with autism spectrum disorders are receiving, teachers' understanding and knowledge of autism spectrum disorders, educational techniques and interventions for children of all ages, and professional development of education personnel.
