Pathways Project

The Pathways in ASD study, the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, is investigating how children with ASD grow and develop over time and what factors account for the best outcomes. Approximately 440 children with ASD and their families in five locations across Canada (greater Halifax, greater Montreal, Hamilton, British Columbia, and Alberta) are participating. More than 320 children are currently enrolled in the study. These children and their families will be followed from the time they receive a diagnosis of ASD (2-4 years of age) until they finish grade 1 (roughly 6 years of age). We are assessing many factors, such as social competence, communication skills, behaviour, and ability to function independently, that influence areas of development related to the child, the family, and the community as a whole.

By gaining a better idea of what contributes to healthy outcomes for these children, the researchers will be able to guide the development of new policies, programs and interventions that will optimize the strengths of children with ASD and their families. It will also improve our knowledge of what shapes healthy outcomes for all children with special needs, ensuring that policy makers and service providers are making decisions based on the best evidence. The Pathways in ASD study is a landmark research project that will influence the science of autism, the clinical services provided, and the formulation of policy-making in Canada for years to come.
