Prevalence refers to the rates of occurrence of a disease or condition in a given population at a specific point in time. It is important to have accurate estimates of the occurrence of autism to know if there is, for instance, a real increase in its occurrence and to help understand what that increase may be related to. Prevalence rates are useful for planning of educational, medical, and social interventions.
